Khumalo, Thokozile [MaThoko] (1947– 93), South African activist. Thokozile Khumalo or MaThoko, as she was affectionately known to the township youth of KwaThema, played an important role in gay and lesbian community organisation in the 1980s. Initially in support of her gay nephew, MaThoko opened her heart and her home to lesbian and gay youth in her community. Her address, 32 Legodi Street, became synonymous with the local chapter of the Gay and Lesbian Organisation of the Witwatersrand (GLOW), an organisation committed to lesbian and gay liberation, under the broader banner of the anti-apartheid movement. The KwaThema chapter of GLOW was one of the strongest township-based chapters of GLOW and played an important role in the development of a generation of young black activists. 32 Legodi Street became a refuge, meeting place and social centre for the gay and lesbian youth of KwaThema. All GLOW’s mailing to members living in this East Rand township was addressed to ‘No. 32’. In commemoration of the significance of the address, the postbox was donated to the Gay and Lesbian Archives of South Africa in 1997. MaThoko led the KwaThema delegation to successive Gay and Lesbian Marches until her untimely death in 1993 in her forty-sixth year.
